SAXS and Shannon Channels Paper

#1 Post by tdgrant1 » 2011.03.29 17:05

Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone knew of a paper describing the connection between the Shannon sampling theorem used in several of the ATSAS programs and SAXS intensity profiles. All of the mentions of Shannon channels in SAXS manuals or papers seem to reference the original 1949 Shannon paper discussing information theory, but I can't seem to find a reference for how this information relates to SAXS data interpretation, particularly the estimation of the number of Shannon channels to describe the information present in the scattering curve by calculating Dmax/pi.

Any literature references would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Tom

Hi Tom,

a number of books and reviews discuss this, so I suppose it depends on exactly what you're after. A good one is the following:

Koch MH, Vachette P, Svergun DI. Small-angle scattering: a view on the properties, structures and structural changes of biological macromolecules in solution. Q Rev Biophys. 2003 May;36(2):147-227 (The relevant section is Section 4.2, pp169-170).

Although not tied directly to SAXS/SANS Numerical Recipes has a chapter with Shannon sampling in it if you want more algorithmic stuff (Can't remember exactly where though, sorry).

Hope it helps.
